The letter probably originated on Campobello Island, New Brunswick, and was carried out of the mails to Eastport to take advantage of the steamboat from Eastport to St. John. Eastern Express Company, large express label generally affixed to parcels rather than letters. "FROM EASTPORT" label would generally be used on parcels accepted at Eastport, but could been affixed at Eastport on parcels handed off by conjunctive express partners. The 51 Devonshire St. Boston address dates the label to the 1869 to 1874 period.
