Lanman & Kemp Facsimile Labels

Following the repeal of the proprietary tax in 1883, many of the companies using Private Die Proprietary stamps prepared facsimile versions of their stamps, to satisfy consumers that were accustomed to seeing the private die design on packages of the company's product.

Lanman & Kemp had their private die stamp modified by replacing the words "U.S. Inter. Rev." with "New York" which was formerly above the bottom label.  The word "Proprietary" was also deleted.  The value labels in the tables at left and right of the phoenix were replaced with a leaf pattern.  The value numerals at top were replaced with five-pointed stars.  Additionally, the horizontal shading lines in the value tables are replaced with vertical shading lines in the facsimile.  The individual stamps were likely cut from the strip facsimile label, such as the examples above (102 x 26 mm.).

 Lanman & Kemp also used a facsimile of their private die proprietary stamp on the back of many of their Victorian trade cards.

Lanman & Kemp use a facsimile of their private die proprietary stamp on bottles of Murry & Lanman's Florida Water to this day.  The bottle above was purchased in 2007.
