(HAPAG Line)

The HAPAG Line was founded in 1848, but did not carry mail between Hamburg and New York until 1856.  The HAPAG Line operated until 1970.

Smyrna, Turkey, October 7, 1865, Cousinery & fils senders cachet, per French Ligne de Syrie paquebot Gange, Marseilles & Lyon October 14 transit, Paris October 16 transit, then per HAPAG line Saxonia from Southampton October 18, 1865, manuscript rated 126 / 90 (US notes / coin) triple rate (manuscript 3 in orange at left) and manuscript 63 cent (3 x 21 cent) debit to France in black.

 

Hamburg, February 16, 1867, per HAPAG Teutonia, Hamburg Packet February 16, 7 cent debit to United States, "N.Y. HAMB. PKT. MAR 8 10 OR 13 U.S. NOTES" depreciated currency exchange office marking.
