Civil War Patriotic Covers
Civil War Patriotic Covers were not commonly used on mail to the Maritime Provinces, perhaps because many of the surviving covers are business correspondence.

Chelsea, Massachusetts, July 29, 1861, 1¢ blue type V 1857, and pair and single 3¢ dull red type II 1857 pay the treaty rate to Halifax, Nova Scotia. “U STATES / C” in arc exchange office marking used on Boston to St. John coastal steamboats. Colchester, Connecticut, September 4, 1861, Civil War patriotic cover (Weiss F-F 122a) rated 10¢ due treaty rate to Moncton, New Brunswick, “U. STATES. / C” 34 x 20 mm arc exchange office marking.

Shelbyville, Minnesota, January 20, 1863, Civil War patriotic cover (Weiss F-F 233) 10¢ yellow-green 1861 pays the treaty rate to Southampton, New Brunswick. “U. STATES 10 PAID” exchange office marking of Detroit, Michigan, routed through Windsor, Canada West, and Montreal, Canada East, and Woodstock, New Brunswick.
