Lanman & Kemp Cancellations Lanman & Kemp's private die proprietary stamps were first issued in March 1874. Prior to that date, Lanman & Kemp made provisional use of the government issue proprietary stamps.
Lanman & Kemp handstamp cancellations are also known on government documentary stamps. These stamps were likely used to pay the tax upon commercial transactions, such as bonds, certificates, entry of goods, receipts, etc.
