"This place is in a wilderness ten miles from nobody.  There are about 500 men here of which 250 are Italians.  About a dozen women I guess  . . .  - they are constructing an $80,000 dam thirty feet high across the St. Croix River - all masonry.  . . . I have an office in the designer's building and live in a shack with the officers . . . .  Five of us sleep over the office.  We eat in another shack - no china dishes - tin plates, cups, benches, etc. good grub.  The mosquitoes are quite tame here.  The streets are marked out.   Broadway + Main streets etc. - would not have known them unless they were pointed out - mud + stumps everywhere.  Came near having a bad accident here last week - 150 lbs. of dynamite went off unexpectedly within a few yards of 300 men - yet no one was hurt."
